About this Degree This program provides students with an opportunity to pursue studies in Greek and Roman literature, history, archaeology, art, philosophy, and religion, with or without concentrating on the ancient languages, although some study in Latin and/or Greek is strongly encouraged. The major comprises five areas of emphasis (AOEs): 1) Classical Culture 2) Classical Culture—Classical Archaeology, 3) Classical Languages—Greek, 4) Classical Languages—Greek & Latin, and 5) Classical Languages—Latin. All students who enter and most students who transfer to the University Fall 2008 or later must meet the new UGA General Education Core Curriculum requirements (GENED). The major also prepares students to enter graduate school in classics, comparative literature, linguistics, history, and other fields for university teaching positions. Other opportunities include careers in law, journalism, and business.
