Classical Languages Major Requirements (A.B.)

The Classical Languages A.B. offers emphases in Greek, Latin, or Greek and Latin.

 

I. UGA General Education Core Curriculum (GENED) Requirements and Recommendations for Major

 

IV: World Languages and Culture, Humanities, and the Arts (12 Hours)

Preferred Course(s): CLAS 1000/CLAS 1000H  or CLAS 1010/CLAS 1010H  (take course in Area IV or in general electives)

 

V: Social Sciences (9 Hours)

Preferred Course: CLAS (ANTH) 2000 

 

VI. Courses Related to the Major (18 Hours)

Required courses:

GREK 2001 or 2001W, GREK 2002 (Area of Emphasis in Greek and Area of Emphasis in Greek and Latin)

LATN 2001 or LATN 2001W, LATN 2002 (Area of Emphasis in Latin and Area of Emphasis in Greek and Latin)

 

Choose one course from the following:

CLAS 1020 or CLAS 1020H. Classical Mythology

CLAS (ANTH) 2000. Classical Archaeology 

 

Choose three courses from the following:

II. Major Requirements 

Major Required Courses

Select one of the following Areas of Emphasis:

 

Area of Emphasis in Greek:

Five 4000-level or above GREK courses

 

Area of Emphasis in Latin:

LATN 3010, LATN 3020

Three 4000-level LATN courses

 

Area of Emphasis in Greek and Latin:

LATN 2001, LATN 2002 or GREK 2001, GREK 2002 (whichever not taken in Area VI)

LATN 3010, LATN 3020

Two 4000-level LATN courses

Four 4000-level GREK courses

 

Major Elective Courses (15 hours)

Five 3000-level or above courses, in any combination, in CLAS, GREK, or LATN, or courses in ANTH, ARHI, CMLT, HIST, LING, PHIL, RELI that have a significant component dealing with the ancient Greco-Roman world and are approved by the Classics Department. The fifteen hours can include up to 6 hours of 1000/2000-level Latin, Greek or Hebrew (when NOT used to satisfy the major’s or the College’s foreign language requirement).

 

General Electives (30 hours for Greek or Latin emphases; 15 hours for Greek and Latin emphasis)

Greek Emphasis

Required Courses (12 hours): Four 3000-/4000-level GREK courses

 

Electives (3 hours): One course 3000-level or above in CLAS, LATN, GREK

 

Latin Emphasis

Required Courses (12 hours): Four 3000-/4000-level LATN courses

 

Electives (3 hours): One course 3000-level or above in CLAS, LATN, GREK

 

Greek and Latin Emphasis

Required Courses (12 hours): Two 3000-/4000-level GREK courses, two 3000-/4000-level LATN courses

 

Electives (3 hours): One course 3000-level or above in CLAS, LATN, GREK

 

TOTAL HOURS REQUIRED FOR THIS MINOR: 15 hours

 

Undergraduate Programs

UGA Classics explores Greek and Roman culture (material; intellectual; religious) from Troy to Augustine; Classical languages and literatures (Greek, Latin, and in English translation); and the reception of Classical Antiquity with A.B. and M.A. Classics degrees with multiple areas of emphasis. Double Dawgs degrees focus on careers in Historic Preservation and World Language Education.
