Greek Requirements

Greek Major Requirements

All students who enter and most students who transfer to the University Fall 2008 or later must meet the new UGA General Education Core Curriculum requirements (GENED).  

I. UGA General Education Core Curriculum (GENED) Requirements and Recommendations for Major

 

IV: World Languages and Culture, Humanities, and the Arts (12 Hours)

Preferred Course(s): CLAS 1000/CLAS 1000H or CLAS 1010/CLAS 1010 H (take course in Area IV or in general electives)

 

V: Social Sciences (12 Hours)

Preferred Course: CLAS (ANTH) 2000 

 

VI: Courses Related to the Major (18 Hours)

Required courses:

GREK 2001

GREK 2002

 

Choose one course from the following:

CLAS 1020/CLAS 1020H. Classsical Mythology

CLAS (ANTH) 2000. Classical Archaeology 

 

Choose three courses from the following:

ARHI 2100 or ARHI 2100H. Monuments of World Art

CLAS 1000/CLAS 1000H. Greek Culture (if not taken in Area IV)

CLAS 1010/CLAS 1010H. Roman Culture (if not taken in Area IV)

CLAS 1020/CLAS 1020H (if not taken in previous category of Area VI)

CLAS (ANTH) 2000 (if not taken in previous category of Area VI)

CLAS (LING) 2010. Nature of the English Vocabulary

CMLT 2210 or CMLT 2250H. Western World Literature I

HIST 2301 or HIST 2311H. History of Western Society to 1500

LING 2100/LING 2100H. The Study of Language

PHIL 1000/PHIL 1000H. Introduction to Philosophy

RELI 1001 or RELI 2001H. Introduction to Judaism, Christianity & Islam

 

II. Major Requirements (60 Hours)

 

Major Required Courses (15 hours)

Five 4000-level GREK courses

 

Major Elective Courses (15 hours)

Five 3000-level or above courses, in any combination, in CLAS, GREK, or LATN, or courses in ANTH, ARHI, CMLT, HIST, LING, PHIL, RELI that have a significant component dealing with the ancient Greco-Roman world and are approved by the Classics Department. The fifteen hours can include up to 6 hours of 1000/2000-level Latin or Hebrew.

 

General Electives (30 hours)

(Refer to College-wide requirements when selecting general electives.)

 

Greek Minor Requirements

Required Courses (9 hours): Three 4000-level GREK courses

Electives (6 hours): Two 3000-level or above in CLAS, GREK, LATN (limited to one course), or suitable courses on the ancient world in other departments (e.g., ARHI, CMLT, HIST, LING, PHIL, RELI) approved by the Classics Undergraduate Coordinator.

 

TOTAL HOURS REQUIRED FOR THIS MINOR: 15 hours

Undergraduate Programs

UGA Classics explores Greek and Roman culture (material; intellectual; religious) from Troy to Augustine; Classical languages and literatures (Greek, Latin, and in English translation); and the reception of Classical Antiquity with A.B. and M.A. Classics degrees with multiple areas of emphasis. Double Dawgs degrees focus on careers in Historic Preservation and World Language Education. Minor degrees in Classical Culture and Classics and Comparative Cultures complement degree programs across campus. New to Classics?
